“Last Card” 2013, acrylic and chalk on canvas, 1500x1700mm, finalist Wallace Awards, Wallace Trust Collection
This work strips back recent themes of human history and life cycles to the youngest and oldest standing members of my family. The swinging child is a motif taken from whimsical 16th century Dutch tiles. Like the swinging child, our life can not go all the way round, victory over death comes from the passing down of a legacy or a genetic print. The shining granddaughter is engaged in a playful game of last card while my elderly father fading away, is more literary playing his last card.
