Elm St, Dunedin City 2021
A new mural overlooking Dunedin City by Brendan McGorry that celebrates the culture and landscape of the Otago region through a re-shuffle and reimagining of iconic works from the Dunedin Public Art Gallery.
Under a bright Matariki sky and between a Southern Rata and a Cabbage Tree, two Children play cards embracing chance and joy, across a vast table laid with symbols of creativity and regeneration.
The children are flanked to the left by Tairoa Head light house and Dunedin Beaches populated with beach goers and sea lions. Above the beach in the suburbs we have a view of student central and the celebrated 660 Castle St.
To the right over looked by media icon Kim Hill as a McCahonesque angel sits Lake Wanaka’s “That Wanaka Tree” in front of the southern Alps. This image is inspired by a 1938 Rita Angus watercolour.
